True confession…becoming a hairstylist was not my first (or even second) choice for a career, but boy am I glad I ended up here!
I’ve never been a stranger to doing hair. My mother was a “beautician” as she called it, and I’ve had a knack for doing hair for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my mom taught me lots about hair and by high school, I was doing quite a bit of hair in my mom’s kitchen! But, when I graduated from high school, I didn’t want to go to cosmetology school. I thought the correct path for me was to go to college and get a “real” job. So I did! In 1999, I graduated from the University of New Orleans with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology. I worked in Cardiac Rehab for a short stint before shifting gears and taking on a position as a claims adjuster with Progressive Insurance. I worked my way up through the ranks in the insurance arena, dabbled in real estate and personal training, but I knew in my heart these weren't the careers I longed for. Fast forward a few years and a couple of amazing kids later, I began to truly consider how I could have the flexibility of being there for my family and doing something I truly loved. That's when I realized I had to go back to my roots (pun intended)! So in 2009 I began an apprenticeship program to become a licensed Barber. I caught on quickly, began taking clients after only 3 months and completed the program in 2011. I worked for a short time in the salon where I did my apprenticeship and then moved my business to my home where I stayed for another 6 years. In January of 2018, I Joined the team at Salon Gio.
Since becoming a hairstylist, I can honestly say “I LOVE MY JOB”! Every day and every client is different. With all of my life experience, I can relate to people on many different levels. I am a great listener and I strive to give each person who sits in my chair a unique experience.
